With pollution and congestion increasing in Bristol, it’s useful to know that there’s a strong and reliable public transport system operating across the city.
Many of Bristol’s city centre buses are run by First Travel, which operates 38 designated routes in the area.
Most of the buses leave from a central point at Bristol Bus Station [map] on Marlborough Street, and wind their way to the far corners of Bristol. This includes “nightflyers” that run until the early hours of the morning.
National Express coaches leave from a stop close to the Bus Station at The Haymarket or Bond Street.
Bristol Bus Station is currently undergoing a programme of redevelopment, which is due to finish in summer 2005, for this reason some of the stops might be relocated during this period.
For more information about timetables and bus routes contact Traveline on 0870 608 2 608.
Bringing your car into Bristol city centre doesn’t present the same kind of problems as driving into some major UK cities but you’ll still have to face several one-way systems and struggle to find a parking spot.
There is currently a park and ride system in operation at Long Ashton, where drivers can leave their vehicles in a secure environment and hop on the bus for a small fee (children under 16 travel free). They’ll then be taken into the heart of Bristol.
The service operates from Monday to Saturday between 7:00am and 7:00pm weekdays, and between 8:am and 7:pm on Saturdays. On Thursdays the service runs until 8.20pm for late night shopping in Broadmead. |
