Blackpool is not renowned
as a town of romance but with a little imagination you can make your
break in Britain’s busiest seaside town a fairytale experience.
For a start there are a number of top class hotels with a few added
extras that will no doubt impress your loved one. The Imperial
Hotel [map]
on the exclusive North Promenade has beautifully designed bedrooms,
along with a wonderful health club including a swimming pool, sauna,
steam room, solarium, spa bath and gym.
Blackpool also has a four-star Hilton Hotel [map],
which has breathtaking views of the seafront and a good choice of
rooms, including plush suites for that special occasion. It also boasts
a free car park, indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, restaurant,
cocktail bar, and a nightclub.
If you want to stay a little out of town then book your room at the
De Vere Herons’ Reach [map].
This is a superb hotel with excellent leisure facilities including
a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi, and an 18-hole golf course
with an 18-bay floodlit driving range.
Once you’ve checked into your hotel, you can head out into central
Blackpool to see some of the more romantic sights of the town.
For art lovers there’s the Grundy Art Gallery [map],
situated near the Blackpool Central Library on Queen Street. The gallery
houses a large collection of oils and watercolours, modern British
paintings, prints, and Oriental ivories, which was started by the
brothers, Cuthbert and John Grundy.
Alternatively you could head down to the South Promenade, where you’ll
find another display of contemporary art in the form of the
Great Promenade Show [map].
This is an outdoor exhibition of sculptures, constructions and lighting
by some of the UK's leading artists and designers.
Of course, no trip to Blackpool is complete without a visit to the
Blackpool Tower [map],
the town’s major landmark that can be seen from miles around.
With its Eiffel Tower-style structure, this could be the most romantic
place in the resort as you make your way hand-in-hand to the top to
the glass-floored ‘Walk of Faith’.
For a more action-packed day out with your other half, head to South
Shore where you’ll find Blackpool Pleasure Beach [map].
Here you can brave white-knuckle rides, such as the tallest, fastest
rollercoaster in Europe, the Pepsi Max Big One. Other rides not
for the faint hearted include the Spin Doctor, Valhalla and Bling,
while the theme park is also home to the world’s longest
log flume.
Blackpool is also home to three piers, the best for loved-up couples
being the Big Wheel on Central Pier [map],
where you can lose yourself in each other – and the magnificent
views.
If you want some quiet time together or a romantic picnic head to
Stanley Park [map]
on West Park Drive, where there are numerous pathways leading
to quiet corners. Here you can also enjoy the Blackpool Countryside
Experience; a series of nature walks through the Woodland Gardens
to Marton Mere Nature Reserve.
Once you’ve seen the sights, you’ll probably want to head
off for a quiet dinner for two at one of the best
restaurants in Blackpool.
A hit with visiting celebrities, the September Brasserie [map]
on Queen Street is run by chef-patron Michael Golowicz and has
been mentioned in the Good Food Guide since it opened back
in 1990.
There’s also the White Tower [map]
on Ocean Boulevard at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which has a distinct
Las Vegas-style to it, along with great views of the promenade. Here
the food has a modern British flavour with plenty of little
extras, while the service is renowned for being fast and friendly.
Seafood is always a hit for starry-eyed lovers, so for something different
you could always head to Seniors Fish Bar and Restaurant [map],
which offers a wide range of fresh fish and seafood dishes along with
vegetarian alternatives.
Or if you’d rather have traditional fish and chips either
in a restaurant or to takeaway and eat on the seafront, then pay a
visit to the renowned Harry Ramsden’s [map]
on Central Promenade.
After the meal you can head to one of Blackpool’s
theatres for a night of music, drama, dance or comedy, such as
the Grand Theatre [map],
which has performances by the likes of the English National Ballet.
Blackpool’s oldest (despite many rebuilds) theatre is the Opera
House [map]
at the Winter Gardens, which is situated just up the street from
the Grand. This theatre stages a huge array of concerts, comedy nights
and is the best place in Blackpool to catch touring West End musicals,
such as Cats, Summer Holiday and Grease.
Also located in the Winter Gardens complex is the Pavilion Theatre
[map],
which is used for plays, musicals and dance shows.
If you don’t fancy live entertainment then why not head to Blackpool’s
only cinema, the Odeon [map],
to see a romantic comedy or action film.
