Whether it’s football,
darts, cricket or badminton, Blackpool has a wealth of sports centres
where you can work off those calories before your next portion of
fish and chips from the seafront! The multi-purpose Blackpool Sports Centre [map] on West Drive has facilities for many different types of sport, including volleyball, climbing, aerobics, indoor hockey, badminton, football, basketball, martial arts and netball. If a dip in the pool is more your idea of a keep fit regime there are two public swimming pools in Blackpool, Lido Pool [map] on Lytham Road and Moor Park Swimming Pool [map] on Bristol Avenue. However, if you want to take the kids along then Sandcastle Waterworld [map] on the Promenade is probably the best choice. This long-established popular attraction has water slides and a wave pool. Those of you who fancy a game of crown green bowling, look no further than the Blackpool Borough Indoor Bowls Centre [map] on Larkhill Street, an eight-rink bowling stadium used for both competitive matches and casual family fun. Blackpool also has a wealth of top class golf clubs on its doorstep, including North Shore Golf Club [map] and Fleetwood Golf Club [map]. Both these clubs offer 18-hole 71 par courses. And for the casual golfer there is the council-run Stanley Park Golf Course [map], which has 18 holes. The town also has a good cricket team, Blackpool Cricket Club [map], which plays in the Northern Premier League alongside the likes of Fleetwood, Barrow and Lancaster. Based at Stanley Park, the club’s ground also plays host to some county matches played by Lancashire County Cricket Club. Football is another locals’ favourite, with thousands of fans turning out to watch the Tangerines, Blackpool FC, in action at their Bloomfield Road Ground [map]. Blackpool’s other major sporting event is the Stan James World Matchplay Darts Championship, which is held annually at the Winter Gardens’ Empress Ballroom [map]. The world's top 32 professional dart players battle it out for over £100,000 in prize money in front of a 2,000-strong crowd, with many more people watching at home as the event is shown live on worldwide television.
