| If you plan to spend
much of your holiday time attempting to be the next Tiger Woods,
or just trying to get your handicap down you’ll be pleased
to know that there’s plenty of scenic golf courses in Belfast
on which to spend some quality time.
Try one of the biggest and the best at Balmoral Golf Club [map],
Lisburn Road. This is an 18-hole parkland course just three miles
south of the city centre. You can hire clubs here so you don’t
have to carry them through the airport (or on the ferry) and there’s
also trolley and caddie hire too. You can also hire left-handed
golf clubs which is a real boon that helps make this club one of
the most popular in Belfast.
Head to the beautiful town of Carrickfergus [map]
and check out its golf club at North Road. This picturesque venue
is more than 75 years old and has a traditional décor that
still manages to look fresh and bright. Enjoy fine dining in the
on site restaurant and then try the challenging 18-hole golf course.
If you like a green with a view try the Fortwilliam Golf Club
[map],
Downview Avenue. Here you’ll be able to look out over Cave
Hill and the sea as you tackle the 18th hole. Alternatively, have
a bit of fun on the practice fairway.
Greenisland Golf Club [map], Upper Road, Greenisland, allows
you to prebook your dinner in the restaurant before you hit the
fairway. This means that once you complete the nine-hole golf course
you can sit down to a hearty meal almost straight-away.
Often regarded as one of the best parkland courses in the British
Isles, Malone Golf Course [map],
Upper Malone Road, Dunmurry, is nothing short of a joy to visit.
And you never know who you might meet here as this course is frequented
by professional golfers and celebrities. You can choose between
an 18-hole main course or the nine-hole course at Edenberry. Both
offer amazing scenery and the 18-hole course even has a trout lake
at its centre.
If you need some practice before hitting any of the above courses,
head to Whitehead Driving Range [map],
Slaughterford Road, Whitehead, Carrickfergus, and perfect your swing.
There are 18 indoor bays here and 19 outdoor grass bays. There’s
also a modern coffee bar to sit and relax in once you are confident
your swing is at its best.
